What is a Satmap You will have heard of a satnav, Satmap is basically a similar device designed for outdoor pursuits or environments without listed roads. It uses the same GPS technology used in satnav devices and then combines this with detailed terrain information. It does still contain road information but is designed for a more rugged environment. Essentially it is a navigation device that will guide and track your progress via GPS and help you find alternative routes when required.
Unlike some similar devices the Satmap has a electronic magnetic compass direct you to each waypoint on your route, making using a Satmap a very simple task. Its full colour screen displays digital maps of various kinds including OS mapping.
The latest Satmap devices are waterproof, intuitive to use and extremely reliable.
The Satmap Active 10 uses a SiRFStarIII Receiver, has a 3.5 inch colour screen, built in memory of 128mb and a SD card slot. The Satmap weighs around 250g including the supplied 3 AA batteries.
For those using the Satmap in other counties you can buy digital OS maps for other countries.
